Malaya is imagined as a fragrance that grew out of the quiet rituals of Indian women, where sandalwood and agarwood were used to steady the mind and soften the emotional air of a space. Texts such as the Charaka Samhita, the Sushruta Samhita, and the Ashtanga Hridayam reflect this understanding, where the atmosphere around the body was considered an ally in restoring balance of mind and temperament.
